Chemical, physical and biological characteristics of Lake Clark and selected surface waters of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska : 1986 progress report

Stottlemyer R and Chamberlain D. 1987. Chemical, physical and biological characteristics of Lake Clark and selected surface waters of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska : 1986 progress report. GLARSU (Great Lakes Area Resource Studies Unit). 24. Michigan Technological University. Houghton, MI

This progress report covers the second year (1986) of a three-year water quality study in Lake Clark National Park. The objective of the study was to acquire baseline data in nutrient chemistry, primary productivity, and plankton composition and abundance, especially in Lake Clark. During this second field season, a study was initiated on the contribution of suspended and dissolved solids from glacially fed streams to the inorganic nutrient budget of Lake Clark. Ten to 13 stations were occupied each year on Lake Clark; data taken included temperature conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, light penetration, productivity, chlorophyll a, fecal colliform and streptococci, and dissolved and suspended solids. The data suggest that Lake Clark is thermally uniform and cold (4:C) in early spring; surface waters warm in summer but deep waters remain cold. Sediment input affects light penetration seasonally and mid-July is the peak of sediment input. PH increases slightly over summer, and no apparent trends exist for conductance.
