Chronic Herbivory: Impacts on Architecture and Sex Expression on Pinyon Pine

Whitman TG and Mopper S. 1985. Chronic Herbivory: Impacts on Architecture and Sex Expression on Pinyon Pine. Science. 228(4703):1089-1091

Presents the result of a three year study of the impact of Dioryctria albovitella infestation on pinyon pine growth in Northern Arizona (includes Sunset Crater). It was determined that this moth affects tree architecture, growth rate, reproductive output, and sexual expression. These strong impacts probably represent a selective pressure in the evolution of host traits of the pinyon pine.
