Water-use characteristics of plants are to be investigated in relationship to the differences in climate in various desert study areas. Rather than surveying available water, the study looks at processes of water use, and will evaluate the benefits to plants of general efficiency in water use versus capacity for immediate uptake of transient water. Some research has been done, yielding two possible interpretations, and two experiments are suggested for clarification. Background information and details of the proposed study are provided. The study sites are in the southwest United States, with one at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Seed collections are to made, with plants grown in the greenhouse at the University of Utah.
