A new combination of archeological, geological, paleontological, dendrochronological, and radiometric data form a paleoenvironmental record of the Southwest previously unavailable. When comparing this paleoenvironmental record with demographic changes in the region a pattern appears. This pattern supports the hypothesis that socioeconomic and demographic changes were often triggered by environmental stress. Tables of paleoenvironmental and archeological relationships focus on several of the national parks and monuments in the region (Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon). Includes map of Anasazi habitations, map of data sites, picture of alluvium strata in Dead Juniper Wash, and 2 charts: 1) paleoclimatic indices and 'population' (artifacts, sites, etc.) indices graphed for comparison of Hay Hollow Valley, Grand canyon, Hopi Buttes, Jeddito Valley, Black Mesa, Marsh Pass, Cedar Mesa, Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, and Navajo Reservoir District. 2) Comparison graph of paleoclimatic indices (hydrology, dendrochronology, pollen, and sediment) for Colorado Plateaus (Black Mesa, Hay Hollow Valley, Navajo Reservoir District) and California.
