The paper describes the spruce-fir forests and compares recent studies with older ones. Distribution of the two species in both old growth and second-growth areas are noted, with firs dominant at higher elevations. The aphid has killed almost all old growth fir. The areas compared are Mount Mitchell, Mount Rogers, and the Great Smokies.
