Little Lost Man Creek in Redwood National Park, California is the site used for this study in measuring discharge of a small, high-gradient stream. The authors determined differences between results from two methods: current-meter techniques and injection of chemical tracers into the water. Since the tracers measure underflow as well as surface streamflow, discharge measurements are greater by this method. The authors find that as much as 25 percent of the flow may be within the gravel zones of the stream channel. Measuring the dilution of tracers also helps accommodate such factors as shallow water and rough streambeds which can reduce the accuracy of current-meter measurements. Graphs illustrate chloride concentration and various discharges.
