Composition and structure of the four northern stands (White Mountains) and the nine Southern Appalachian stands disclosed that climate and soil differences were slight. As for other plant species, some were common to both regions, while a few were only found in the north and others in the south. Average maximum ages for spruce were near 300 years, for fir 150. The spruce-fir communities studied are a part of the boreal forest centered in southeastern Canada.
