During an extended drought in the 1980's, sediment loads carried by Redwood Creek decreased to about a sixth of the maximum amounts in the previous decade. The sediment carried during low flows largely came from deposits made during high-flow years. Logging in the 1970's occurred along the lower part of the creek (now part of Redwood National Park), and continues in the upper basin, from which 70 percent of the current sediment comes. Studies have shown that control of erosion and its effects on park resources needs to include non-park areas, and cooperative efforts are underway with other agencies and with private companies and landowners. Public education can also help with present problems and to prevent future ones upstream from national park land. Includes graphs of sediment, runoff, and precipitation data. An original black-and-white print in one copy shows two typical problems at stream crossings of abandoned roads: road fill failing after a culvert became plugged, and water diverting to flow down the road surface.
