Plexiglass and PVC plates were set out at various depths and exposure periods. Plates were set out in both vertical and horizontal attitudes and recruitment patterns of corals to upper and lower surfaces were compared. Results of this study suggest that there is only a finite number of planulae in a given area at any given time. A substantial amount of free space is often still available even in areas in which a high risk of competition for space exists.
