Takes a look at the detailed chart of Tutuila, American Samoa; showed the mountainous volcanic island to be surrounded by an extensive submarine bank from one to three miles wide; shallower near its inner and outer margins than the intermediate belt; the shallower parts are submerged fringing and barrier reefs which should rest on a wave-cut platform now lying between 60-70 fathoms due to subsidence; shores are embayed and bordered with well developed fringing reefs.
