Coyotes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Evaluation of Methods to Monitor Relative Abundance, Movement Ecology, and Habitat Use

Coyotes within GRSM were surveyed by evaluation of scent stations, passive hair-snaggers, and howlings. Only the howling survey proved to be effective as a population indicator, eliciting responses from 21 coyotes at 12 locations. Ranges were estimated at 1 coyote per 12.9 to 39.7 square kilometers, with the denser population at Cades Cove. An account of the monitoring of the six coyotes that were equipped with radio telemetry collars revealed that the most frequently selected areas were open, mixed hardwoods, or pinelands.
