Current Status of Vegetation in Herring River

This report describes changes in vegetation surrounding the impounded area of the Herring River in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, that have occurred since 1974, when a vegetation survey was conducted by Alison Snow. In late summer 1983, the vegetation was surveyed, estimates of plant biomass were made, and water salinity was measured in the same sites studied in 1974; in addition, the extent of excursion of water level due to tides was measured. The report compares their data with previous data in the area (including some vegetation measurements by Elizabeth Koulcheras in 1978, 1980, and 1983) and offers management recommendations. In nine years, there were some striking changes in vegetation, including increase in salt marsh cordgrass, change from cattails to reeds, and decrease in salt marsh hay.
