This is an internal U.S. National Park Service inventory report of Dall sheep in Lake Clark National Park. Aerial counts of portions of the Park were conducted from 31 July to 2 August 1985. Sheep were inventoried in units 1, 2, 5, and 6. During this survey, 235 sheep were observed. Data tabulated included total numbers seen; the numbers of lambs, yearling, ewes, and rams seen; ram horn class sizes; sex and age composition as a proportion expressed per 100 ewes and as percent ram horn curl size. Density estimates varied from .21 sheep/mi2 to .36 sheep/mi2. The survey results indicated that units 1, 2, and 6 include sheep habitat that may be somewhat marginal and peripheral to the main Lake Clark National Park sheep concentrations in units 3, 4, and 5. The report concluded that future survey efforts should be directed towards management concerns and focus on smaller areas of concern where data can be compared from year to year.
