Seven genera of reptiles and one amphibian were collected in the Tularosa Malpais. Most of the reptiles are colored like the black substrate on which they live. It is believed that this dark coloration is genetic rather than transitory, and that the specimens found were naturally selected for this color disposition. Not enough variance was found (other than color) to justify description of a new subspecies.
