Debris flows are sediment slurries with less than about 40 percent water content. The study finds that such flows are a major process by which sediment is transported to the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, particularly in small drainages. Infrequent as these small-drainage flows are, sand from them is potentially an important source of material for river beaches. The magnitude and frequency of debris flows, along with dam releases, control the hydraulics/rapids of the river in this area; includes bibliography.
