This paper presents the results of a 3 year study to determine the rate of decomposition of native herbage in 5 mountain meadows in Sequoia National Park. Weight losses from buried and unburied native herbage and paper were studied to determine more precise decomposition rates. Unburied native herbage resulted in the most precise method and, thus, the preferred technique for measuring decomposition rates. Approximately 50 to 70 percent of the average annual production of native herbage will decompose within one year at the study sites.
