To answer the question of why the saltpetre industry in Kentucky was phased out after the War of 1812, the author checked digested saltpetre purchase records of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Works and concluded that it was a combination of poor cave management exhausting this renewable resource along with cheaper saltpetre being received from India after the war.
