Dendrochronological evidence of the recent history of Exit Glacier

This report documents a study that was initiated to interpret the recent recessional history of Exit Glacier by dating lignophytes (woody plants) growing on or adjacent to glacial deposits. Lignophytes were sampled in May 1982 and February 1983 at 19 sites along a transect extending from the terminus of Exit Glacier to a point approximately 1.5 miles downstream. The oldest trees sampled at each site are listed and dates are assigned to recent positions of the glacier shown on a figure. The oldest date given is 1793, and this record is from a black cottonwood tree.
