Density and Distribution of White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Roadside counts 3 times a week, drive counts every 3 months, and 3-week pellet counts were used to estimate the population of the deer herd in Cades Cove. Buck to doe and doe to fawn ratio were made (more does than bucks) and density estimates were made. Density was estimated at between 0.29 deer per hectare to 0.58, making disease and habitat degradation likely. Alternatives offered were removal of the deer, removal of the cattle, or developing the 'educational and research potential of the Cove.'
