In 1990, 74 plant species (69 flowering plants, 2 lichens and 3 ferns) at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park were recorded at 100 locations, using the Brown-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. Thirty-nine of these species (53%) were found to be alien, and eleven have been declared 'noxious' by the State of Hawaii. Eight major and four lesser plant communities were mapped on the basis of dominant growth form, species composition and substrate; nine of these communities were found to be dominated by alien species. Species lists and maps of vegetation type coverage are included. Eradication of non-native plants and replacement with culturally significant or endemic species is recommended. Proposed park facilities are seen having little adverse impact on native vegetation.
