This dissertation sets out to investigate the degree and nature of fracture influence on caves in the Mammoth Cave region and to explore the general aspects of the region's hydrology and geomorphology, in relation to the caves, and how the caves and region have evolved. Field studies for the research were of two broad types: regional geomorphology and hydrology, and orientation of joints, fracture traces, and caves. A results and analysis section includes discussions on subterranean drainage basins and profiles, influence of caves on surface topography, evolution of cavern passages (tubes, canyons, complex shapes), directional trends of caves and passages (dip direction, gradient and inherited patterns, folds, etc.) in specific locations in Mammoth Cave, and effect of joints and fracture traces on caves and karst. An overview of previous literature introduces the topic.
