Development of the four seepage ponds in the Gull Pond chain (Gull, Higgins, Herring, and Williams ponds) at the head of the Herring River basin in Cape Cod National Seashore has been studied by analyzing radiocarbon-dated lake and marsh sediment cores for pollen, charcoal, diatoms, cladocera, and sediment chemistry. Environmental changes in the ponds and in the Herring River marsh since European settlement have been compared to the prior evolution of this landscape since the origin of the ponds. From the sedimentary record many surprising results have been revealed. These findings lead to unexpected interpretations of the geomorphology of the Gull Pond region compared to that of other Outer Cape ponds.
