From March through December 1985, observers monitored foal birth and mortality for seven feral horse herds on Cumberland Island National Seahore. Eight foals were born, but only three survived. The survivorship rate of 37% is lower than estimated rates of 50 to 86% reported for free ranging horses in the western US and suggests the Cumberland herd may be exceeding the carrying capacity of the island. ...A study to determine foal survival rates for the feral horse population at Cumberland Island National Seashore.
