Differential distributions of elk (Cervus canadensis) by sex and age were reported for the Gallatin elk winter range, Montana, from 1958-63. Adult bulls comprised greater proportions of the elk observed in the south and north units of the winter range than in the central unit. Cows and calves comprised greater proportions of the elk observed in the central unit. Field classification efforts must consider such distribution patterns if representative sex and age ratios are to be obtained.
