This report provides information on National Park Service ranger activities and observations made at American Creek during 1987. From 28 May to 17 September, rangers were stationed at American Creek to enforce regulations and permit conditions and to collect data on salmon habitat and on the vegetation composition of areas impacted by human use. Rangers made 59 trips up American Creek; they contacted 109 guides and over 350 clients. The overall compliance with permit conditions and park regulations was good. A complete breakdown of visitor use is presented by month and lodge service used. Information was gathered and is presented on daily fish catch-and-release records representing 563 fishing days. Observations were made on wildlife present and are noted. A series of recommendations is provided, including decreasing National Park Service patrols, limiting concession permits, and monitoring sockeye salmon spawning habitat.
