The mainland cliffs and islands between Amber and Kamishak bays along the eastern half of the Alaska Peninsula, including Becharof National Wildlife Refuge and Katmai National Park, were surveyed in 1980 and 1981. The purpose of the survey was to locate sea bird colonies, determine species composition, and estimate numbers. Approximately 206,000 sea birds representing 18 species were observed nesting in the region. The 18 species recorded are discussed. The authors argue that brown bears are a limiting population factor for burrow-nesting birds in the area of survey.
