This article is about the tailed frog, Ascaphus truei, of northwestern California, including Redwood National Park. These frogs are found in areas of differing climate and vegetation, and a table lists some of the plant communities and substrates inhabited by tailed frogs. As indicated by the occurrence of tailed frogs in Redwood Creek, logging has less negative influence on these amphibians in coastal areas than it does inland. Water temperature may be a limiting factor, and the species needs perennial, swift streams. The article includes a distribution map, graphs of mean temperatures and of daytime water temperatures.
