This paper studies the recruitment of Devils Hole pupfish, Cyprinodon diabolis, ass related to diel variation in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and water temperature. The authors found that larval and juvenile fishes regularly rested on the white mesh tops of breeder boxes during the evening and night, facilitating accurate observations of larvae. Modifying the breeder box served as a passive sampling tool when deployed as submerged platforms a few centimeters above the substrate at each of the ten study sites. It was concluded that certain sites on the upper shelf are more successful at producing hatched larvae; therefore, contribute more to recruitment. These sites are characterized by greater diel DO variation, a substrate of large to medium cobble with abundant interstices, heavy encrustation by diatoms, and no thick, overlying algal mats.
