The Historic Preservation Architectural Guide provides a basis for the National Park Service and Concessionaire to preserve, reconstruct, and maintain the Lake McDonald cabins. The structures, being on the National Register of Historic Places, require special attention to retain their historical and architectural The Guide will provide a plan for future work and maintenance integrity. of the structures so that their integrity will remain intact. There are items that should be cared for immediately and other items that could be phased in over a number of years. These projects, which come under the title of preservation work, are not only to return the lost integrity of these historic structures, but also to take care of new requirements, i.e., handicapped accessibility, fire codes, etc. while retaining the historic architectural character of the buildings. In addition, there are certain preventive maintenance and cyclical maintenance items that will keep the historic fabric of these structures from deteriorating and losing their historic integrity. The Historic Preservation Architectural Guide will hopefully become the basis for the National Park Service and the Concessionaire to determine who has the responsibility for and what the requirements are for the preservation of the integrity of these structures. The project of providing a Preservation Architectural Guide consisted of an analysis of the cabins to determine the condition and identify problems with the site, exterior and interior of the structures. This is presented verbally as well as photographically in the following text. After reviewing the historical documentation and the existing structures, recommendations for repair, replacement or restoration of materials were made. Class C cost estimates were made in priority for the work to be done. An analysis of handicap access and energy conservation was completed and a Class C cost estimate was provided where appropriate.
