In the summer of 1989, a two year study of fescue grassland ecology in Glacier National Park was initiated. Specific objectives of the study are to identify factors that determine the distribution of fescue grasslands in the park, to describe plant and vertebrate communities that inhabit these fescue grasslands, to identify factors that are potentially disruptive to the natural integrity of fescue grasslands, and to develop a management model that includes hypotheses to be tested by management actions. Also, the effects of the 1988 Red Bench fire on one of the vegetation study sites and on the grassland-forest ecotone was investigated.
