The NLDP employs a randomized version of a non-invasive genetic sampling technique in which a hair-snagging device associated with a visual attractant and an olfactory lure is used to collect lynx hair for DNA analysis. A total of 87 transects, each consisting of 5 hair collection stations, were installed throughout the park in 3 separate grids between June 20 and August 22, 2000. Transects were removed after a 2-week period. An additional 20 single, hair collection stations were installed in a non-random configuration, selectively placed in areas where lynx were known to occur. Hair samples were collected from 53% of the NLDP transects. A total of 96 hair samples were analyzed at the Carnivore Conservation Genetics Lab at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. A total of 8 lynx hair samples were collected-6 via the NLDP and 2 via the non-random survey. DNA analysis identified at least 5 individual lynx from the 6 NLDP samples, and at least 2 individuals from the non-random survey samples. Three lynx hair samples could not be analyzed to the individual level. The total number of unique individuals detected form the NLDP and non-random survey combined was 6, with a possible number of 8 individuals detected.
