Report contains 10 papers that define and identify geoindicators, explore their application in protected area management, and provide a couple of examples of geoindicator monitoring. An international workshop entitled "Geoindicators for Ecosystem Monitoring in Parks and Protected Areas" was held from September 10-14, 2001, at the Discovery Centre, the superb new interpretation facility of Gros Morne National Park in western Newfoundland. This meeting involved some 25 scientists and others interested in monitoring the effects of rapid geological change (<100 years) on ecosystems in protected areas. In 1994, this topic had been the focus of another international meeting in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, also held under the auspices of the International Union of Geological Sciences. It was then that the term "geoindicator" was proposed, in a formal statement on the importance of geological change to environmental assessment. The Gros Morne Declaration - Having found useful application in the interim (see www.lgt.lt/geoin.html), particularly within the U.S. National Park Service, the present meeting was organized to review ways in which geoindicators can be applied in a wide range of protected natural settings, and to provide guidelines for the establishment of new monitoring efforts, including field and laboratory protocols and procedures. The focus was on national parks in Canada and the USA, where the maintenance and management of ecosystems has grown in importance.
