In order to establish a water quality baseline for GLAC lakes, the National Park Service and the Flathead Lake Biological Station began a long term (i.e. 10+ years) cooperative monitoring program in 1984. Five large frontcountry lakes, which are heavily used by park visitors and have lakeshore developments (e.g. hotels, cabins, commercial boating), were monitored in 1990 along with eight backcountry lakes, which are located in very remote, alpine headwater areas of the park (Table 1). Most of the backcountry lakes were sampled once during late summer and the frontcountry lakes were sampled once in mid-summer and again in early fall, 1990. Sampling dates varied mainly in response to logistics and adverse weather (e.g. snow and ice conditions) which endangered personnel attempting to reach backcountry lakes on foot. This report includes all data from the 1990 sampling dates (Table I), and also contains limited interpretation of the water quality baseline.
