Research was carried out during the summer of 1997 on photosynthetic rates of lilies growing in areas dug by grizzly bears, and non dig sites in Glacier National Park. These sites were known to have higher nitrogen levels due to the bear digs. Plants growing in digs had higher photosynthetic rates than plants in undisturbed areas. Therefore, bear digs are beneficial to glacier lilies because the increased nitrogen in the soil increases the photosynthetic rates of lilies.
