Public and private wetlands are identified and inventoried from the Flathead, Stillwater, and Swan River valleys. The ecological assessment primarily focused on vegetation, documenting the types of wetlands present, their quality and condition, and any rare or sensitive species. Observations indicate that some types of wetlands, like wet meadows and valley bottom riparian communities have decreased in acreage and quality in the last 150 years, while some marsh communities, like cattail communities are more common than they historically were. Peatlands and forested wetlands, such as spruce swamps, are rare and provide excellent habitat for wildlife and rare plants and animals.
