Gradient based resource basic inventory (RBI)

A resource basic inventory (RBI) based on a direct gradient analysis of the vegetation and fuel has been developed and implemented for a 10,000 hectare tests area in Glacier National Park, using black and white stereo vertical photos, aerial infrared oblique photos, topographic maps, and field check information. The system describes each hectare (or fraction thereof) by its location on each of six environmental gradients, the effects of various disturbance categories, and certain hydrological and cultural inventory system allows predictions of real-time fire behavior and the resulting successional development of communities following fires. Other RBI programs for natural ecosystems, especially those based on habitat classification types at ecological land units, are limited in their abilities to provide the necessary inputs to combustion models and do not lend themselves to the use of environment-biota correlations.
