This report outlines the use of remote sensing data for 1) determining pre-fire vegetation communities; 2) developing a spectral model that differentiates burn severity classes; and 3) input into an ecosystem model for understanding the effects of a fire on regional estimates of net primary productivity and hydrologic flow. The Red Bench Fire in the North Fork of the Flathead River is used as the ideal situation to study the use of satellite digital data and ecological models for this specific research.
