This assessment concerns potential impacts of work to curtail erosion on lands upstream of Redwood National Park, California. The work, to help protect park resources from effects of excessive erosion, is in cooperation with private landowners. Present management activities could continue as they have since 1995 (with small erosion-control projects, review of proposed timber harvest plans, and research), or one of the two alternatives described here could be selected. The alternatives would both involve heavy equipment, with specific treatments based on conditions at each site, and appropriate actions to protect water quality. Both plans would treat the same number of sites. Differences include reshaping road surfaces with a slant in Alternative C (extensive restoration) instead of using rolling dips, more use of outsloping, and more extensive treatment. The assessment finds the greater expense of Alternative C not cost effective; it could also discourage landowners from participating.
