This assessment concerns a plan to remove some endangered Florida panthers from the wild in an attempt to improve survival chances by raising some panthers in captivity for eventual release. The proposal includes discussion of ways to accomplish this with the least impact to the panthers. Attached sections include comparison of impacts anticipated from alternative plans, summary of panther information and recovery components, written comments, and protocol for managing captive animals. Big Cypress National Preserve is an important part of current panther habitat; pages B-8 and B-9 give details of panther mortalities in the preserve and Big Cypress Swamp area, and there may be other references.
