This thesis describes the dwarfed cypress tree occurring in the Big Cypress Swamp of south Florida; about half the swamp is now within Big Cypress National Preserve. The trees are subject to extreme conditions, with floods in summer and drought in winter, and their communities include little understory vegetation. 'More detailed studies are needed to determine the effects that these areas have on water relations and how these trees respond to fertilization in the long run' [from the author's Summary]. The study finds that a preliminary model represents primary system relationships accurately, and would be useful in future studies. Includes tables of biomass, productivity, parameters for trees in 11 study plots, and more. The figures are mainly data graphs and a few photographs. Appendices: gas metabolism data, test plot data on individual trees of several species, solar insolation penetration of canopy, and additional data.
