This report studies the history of the borax industry in Death Valley, focusing on Eagle Borax Works and Harmony Borax Works. Perhaps the most significant historical activity that occurred in Death Valley was the mining and processing of borax. Death Valley National Monument (Death Valley National Park) possesses the sites of two borax plants, and the purpose of this report has been to study the history of the borax industry in Death Valley and the remains of these plants so as to form a basis for the interpretation of the industry and for determining the extent of preservation of these places. The study should trace the rise of borax refining in the United States, give histories of the individual plants and companies, and discuss the marketing and tariff problems that the product encountered. The study contains administrative data, history data, and architectural data for two of the oldest borax plants in Death Valley: Eagle, which went into operation in 1882, and Harmony, which went into operation in 1883 or 1884. Includes illustrations.
