Early breeding in the river otter

Discussion of breeding cycles for the river otter, Lutra canadensis. The statement is made that they have never been known to breed before they are 2-years old. A captive pair, however, was documented as breeding at 16-months old. Gestation period was recorded at 9 months 18 days. This reported female was later placed in Mammoth Cave National Park for reintroduction of the species.
