Earthquakes in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

Earthquakes near and in Lassen Volcanic National Park are monitored by a small seismograph network of six stations. During the first 14 months of recording, a northwest trending seismic zone passing through the park was identified. Three dense concentrations of earthquakes correlate with three geothermal areas and one concentration outlines the north and east sides of the 4 km-diameter Mt. Tehama caldera. The recent dacite domes in Lassen Park (Lassen Peak and Chaos Crags) are nearly aseismic. With several approximate focal mechanism solutions indicating primarily normal faulting with east-west extension, it can be implied that the northwest trending seismic zone is undergoing extension and right-lateral shear. Included are four figures showing earthquakes and epicenters in the Lassen Region from 1940 to 1978 and a Lassen Earthquake Summary List from 1976 to 1978.
