This project was set up to monitor cave water for fecal bacteria and chloride concentration at selected sites in the Mammoth Cave system, and to continue efforts to determine the 'natural' background of cave water as opposed to direct sewage pollution. It was also designed to research five interrelated areas dealing with food sources for troglobites, pollutants transported by water entering the cave from the surface (both within and without the Park boundaries). These five include: a) Total organic carbon in cave water above base level; b) Total organic carbon and pollutants of cave rivers; c) Total organic carbon and pollutants in parking lot and pavement runoff; d) Cave cricket ecology; and e) Status of the Kentucky Cave Shrimp. The report describes the study site and methodology and interprets the results with narrative, tables, and diagrams. Management and interpretive recommendations are made.
