Heath balds are defined as treeless areas dominated by members of the Ericaceae, within an altitudinal range of 4000 to 6500 feet. The presence of the heath balds is examined as to soils, climate, and catastrophic factors, all important in the local deterioration of the forests which they have supplanted.
