A limnological and riparian survey of Pua`alu`u Stream, in the Kipahulu region of Haleakala N.P. was carried out in 1979. The endemic goby, Lentipes concolor, was very common in the stream, possibly because of the stream's steep morphology & lack of predators (L. concolor candidate endangered species). The stream as a whole was unique in terms of insect fauna, flora, and stream fauna. Flora was primarily exotic, with dense bamboo thickets in several areas; bamboo has negative impact on insects and probably causes significant erosion. Insect fauna is negatively impacted by the long-legged ant (Anoplolepis longipes). Recommendations for protection are made.
