An ecological survey of Wide Rock Butte in Canyon de Chelly, AZ with various archeological objectives and natural history objectives. One is to determine nongrazed arid soil genesis, and another is to compare areas affected by human activity with the pristine environment on Wide Rock. The survey includes an examination of plant species (species list p. 115-116), soils (soil map p. 117), and topography. Table 2 (p. 22) lists species abundance, frequency, crown density and composition of plants on Wide Rock, Canyon de Chelly, AZ. Samples taken from a packrat midden located on Wide Rock produced a list of identified species (Table 3, p. 123) that were then compared to the identified species list for the rest of Wide Rock confirming that Wide Rock is an isolated, undisturbed natural area.
