Desert climatic extremes, open conditions, and dependence of plants on precipitation offer opportunity to isolate such processes as germination for study. This paper describes plant species of several types (shrubs, annuals of varying germination regimes) and the relationship of their germination to season and precipitation. It also discusses factors affecting establishment of the various types, and notes that understanding germination and growth helps explain the general distribution patterns. Illustrations provide meteorological information, a table of germination conditions for some desert plants, and photographs of vegetation.
