The Ecology of the Raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Rabinowitz AR. 1981. The Ecology of the Raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. University of Tennessee

In one year the author captured 288 raccoons, making measurements, taking blood samples, and collecting ectoparasites. Three animals had antibody titers for canine hepatitis, and 2 for canine parvovirus. 73% were positive for blood microfilariae. The population appeared to be stable, with a density of about 1 raccoon for every 17 hectares. Parturition, which occurred in early June, produced a mean litter size of 2.8 young. Average longevity was 30 months with a maximum of 86 months. Activity peaked at about 2200 hours, and day bed sites were well used but often changed.
