This report of a four-year study of Argyroxiphium sandwicense DC. on Haleakala Crater indicates that optimal conditions for germination and seedling survival include: 1) a temperature not exceeding 300 C; 2) the "high moisture content of a stable sandy substratum completely covered by cinder fragments no thicker than about 5 cm."; and 3) maintenance of this cover over an area larger than a hectare for several decades, "best met by a shelf of agglutinates supplying tabular fragments which slide over a sloped sandy germination layer". Compares results with earlier surveys (Lamb, Powers, and Badaracco). Recommends an ongoing census of silversword populations, direct seeding, and transplanting of plants. Appendix I shows maximum and minimum air temperatures between Dec. 1970 and Feb. 1972. Appendix II shows precipitation and fog-interception at eight locations. Appendix III details a census of silversword plants taken between 1969-1972. Appendix IV is a map noting the location of silversword populations, instrument shelters, and rain gages [sic].
